From Surprises to Friendships: My Unforgettable Exchange Year Adventure

Written by Pannom

M4 at Triam Udom Suksa School

My year abroad was full of surprises and adventure. It all began when I took a test to join the AFS exchange program. Passing the test was just the start, as I initially thought about changing my mind. But luckily, my aunt, who once went on an exchange herself, shared her own meaningful experience, and that changed my perspective.

Being in the US taught me so much about different cultures, not just American. I got to dive into Tibetan traditions during a vibrant Tibetan New Year celebration. Of course, I also got to know the American way of life – how they eat, live, and the cool things about their culture.

What I found out was that I really grew up during this year. I became more mature and independent, learning how to communicate better and live with new people, even if I'd never met them before.

Imagine this – going to an American school for the first time was a real challenge. As a newcomer, making friends was tough. But with time, I broke the ice and made friends in all my classes and clubs. How? Just by being open and friendly.

But let me tell you, making friends wasn't the only hurdle. Adjusting to my host family was a whole new ballgame. Living with people who aren't your own family can be quite a ride. Thankfully, my host family made it much easier. And imagine navigating a new city all by yourself – now that was an adventure!

When I look back, my exchange year was like a roller coaster of experiences. It wasn't just about school and friends; it was about becoming a better version of myself. I made lifelong friends, formed a special bond with my host family, and had the time of my life. If someone asked me if I'd do it all again, my answer would be a definite yes!

Thank you, Pannom, for sharing your experiences and insights. Your well upbringing, adaptability, and friendly and thoughtful disposition all contributed to your successful exchange year. I could tell by the end of the year that you have become more confident, more independent, made better decisions, and have matured immensely. You made my job as your AFS liaison more fruitful and less challenging. Thank you for being yourself. Stay well, and smile, always.🙏🏼
