From Bangkok to Montreal: A Transformational Adventure of Growth and Discovery

Written by Bua

Have you ever imagined a completely different picture of yourself and society? I never did until I became an exchange student in Montreal, Canada. The hardest part was before leaving Thailand, carrying expectations with me. But the first lesson I learned was "No expectation, no disappointment."

Montreal is a city that many say you must visit once in your life. Located in Quebec, it boasts European-like architecture, with the Notre-Dame Basilica as one of its iconic landmarks. As I delved into the city, I discovered that the predominant language is French, although many residents are bilingual. From my experience, speaking French was appreciated and brought better treatment.

After passing immigration, my journey through Montreal took me from the vibrant inner city to the tranquil countryside, revealing the diverse landscapes that surround the area. Finally, I arrived at the dormitory—a simple hallway with rooms on either side.

At school, the atmosphere was lively and bustling as students gathered to sit and greet their friends. Teachers were energetic and fostered a participative classroom environment. Engaging in class discussions became the norm, with a focus on exploration rather than right or wrong answers. At the end of the semester, I felt a sense of pride as I received a certificate for my academic improvement.

Sports played a significant role in the lives of many students in Montreal. Whether they were athletes or simply pursuing it as a hobby, the passion for sports was evident. I chose to join the volleyball program and forged meaningful friendships through my participation. The emphasis was not on professional-level skills, but rather on the enthusiasm and willingness to engage.

During my journey from Quebec to Vancouver, I had the opportunity to explore a different region of Canada. Although the landmarks did not necessarily leave a lasting impression, what stood out to me was the warmth and kindness of the people I encountered, especially as I could communicate in English.

Returning to Thailand, others noticed a change in me. I had grown more mature and independent, as I navigated life on my own without relying on my parents' support.

In retrospect, my experience in Montreal encompassed a range of moments, both positive and challenging. It surpassed my initial expectations and left an indelible impact on my personal growth. Words cannot fully capture the depth of this life-changing journey, which will forever shape the trajectory of my future.
